Our library is the perfect place to find the resources you need and a quiet place to study, filled with four floors of books, journals, computer suites and study rooms. Or, if you’d rather work off campus, e-Journals and resources are only a few clicks away using our Virtual Learning Environment.

What will I study?

Our BA (Hons) Business and Finance introduces business and finance theory. Modules have been designed to help you apply your learning to practical situations, gaining the vital skills you need for a successful career.

We cover a mix of financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, auditing, taxation and strategic management modules that blend together to give you an understanding of the financial world and the topical issues affecting that world.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.

We have a bustling business department with lots of expertise. All our business courses cross over, with some modules being shared across the degrees. We believe in breaking down barriers and giving our students every opportunity to expand their network while with us. With smaller class sizes, we give our students one-to-one teaching and around-the-clock support.

Our lecturers have extensive industry and academic experience. They’ll help you mix theory with practice, informing your teaching with their knowledge. We attract many guest speakers, including former students who share their business acumen. We make sure that you’ll always know about the latest trends in the world of business.

Every year we run BizFest, where successful business leaders come to BNU to share their thoughts on business ventures and the future of their industries.

Being so close to London gives us some amazing industry links, giving you the chance to gain experience in the real world. Our focus on real life experience gives you that competitive edge when heading into employment.

Delivery across the programme will take the form of a combination of interactive lectures and seminars as well as one-to-one workshop and tutorial sessions.

Outside of formal scheduled tuition you will be expected to undertake independent learning completing assignments, preparing for sessions and taking increasing responsibility for your personal and professional development.

You will have the opportunity both to work on your own as well as part of a team through small group projects.

The University’s Virtual Learning Environment will support delivery of the programme by providing 24/7 access to core and supplementary learning materials, additional resources such as journal extracts, facilitating dialogue through online discussions boards, and submission of assignments.

You'll be assessed through:

  • essays and reports
  • presentations
  • projects and enterprise activities
  • examinations.

In your final year, you will undertake either a Dissertation or a Consultancy Project, which is a major piece of independent research focused on strategic business issues.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate on projects and live briefs with students from other business management degree programmes, gaining the practical and transferable skills you need for your career.

Professional accreditations and exemptions  

At BNU, you have the opportunity to gain exemptions from seven of the nine ACCA papers at the Fundamentals level. This will help enable you to gain an accounting and finance degree at the same time as qualifying as part-qualified accountants.

  • F4 - Corporate and Business Law
  • F5 - Performance Management
  • F7 - Financial Reporting
  • F9 - Financial Management.

In addition, graduates can also obtain exemptions from up to 7 modules at the Certificate and Operational Levels from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

ACCA is the largest and fastest growing professional accountancy body in the world, so this will help bolster your career prospects.

You can also obtain membership at various levels for the IFA and ICAEW.

Transcripts must be provided by students to confirm the award of membership/exemptions.

Placements Plus

BNU is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.

We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.

Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student, to increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.

What are the course entry requirements?

A typical offer will require a UCAS tariff score of: 32 - 56

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the 3-year undergraduate programme, or those who do not feel fully prepared for a Level 4 course, will be considered for the 4-year programme including a Foundation Year. The University is unable to accept any new applications from students who require sponsorship for a student visa to start in September 2022. This is due to the overwhelming popularity of our courses and visa processing timeframes.  Applications are still being taken from students who are already in the UK and hold the right to study.

From September 2022, those students living in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and EU nationals with settled status in the UK, will be considered Home students.

Most courses will involve some additional costs that are not covered by your fees.

What are my career prospects?

Throughout your time with us we’ll support you on the route to your chosen career. We’ll help you to develop crucial skills, encouraging you to become enterprising, employable and good leaders. This qualification opens doors in management in a variety of sectors. There is also the opportunity to study to become a professional accountant with a number of exemptions from initial exams.

Graduates will be able to progress to a range of opportunities and careers in general business and finance, such as:

This course will help prepare you for a range of roles, such as:

You will also be equipped to develop and manage your own businesses, be this sole proprietorships, partnerships or companies.

Having achieved exemption from specific ACCA and CIMA papers, graduates can also progress their professional qualifications through the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants or indeed through other equally prestigious accountancy professional bodies, such as the ICAEW.

You may also choose to stay at Buckinghamshire New University and study a postgraduate programme.
