Our experienced and specialist team of lecturers are experienced designers, current industry practitioners and researchers.

With our strong links with the fashion industry, you’ll get direct access to guest lectures and can benefit from live project briefs, master classes, and plenty of networking opportunities. Throughout your course you will have the opportunity to take part in international competitions, including British Fashion Council reviews, exhibitions and the BNU Summer Show.

As well as working on your own briefs, you’ll be able to work on industry-based projects with international companies and attend specialist workshops. All our students are invited to events with guest speakers covering a range of areas from fashion design, production, trend prediction, visual merchandising and brand consultancy. As a member of the British Fashion Council  and WGSN our students are supported by industry links  to reach their potential.

We’re proud of the many achievements of our students and staff. Our fashion and textiles programmes are ranked number one in London and the South East and fifth best in the UK. 

We celebrated 100% overall student satisfaction in the 2019 and 2020 National Student Survey. With industry recognising the skills of our students to be selected as one of only five UK institutions to take part in the UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) ‘MADE IT’ [BS1] programme that provided masterclass, networking and internship opportunities.

Industry connections

With regular visiting lectures and workshops led by industry this is just a snapshot of our connections.

British Fashion Council The Fashion Design course is a member of the British Council collages organisation which allows the students to work on industry-led briefs and competitions and guest lectures from brands such as Burberry, Topshop and Armani, Stella McCartney and many others.

UKFT During 2020-21, UKFT provided masterclasses and extended industry connections with the fashion design course. We are one of just five UK providers chosen to take part of the Made it collaboration.

WGSN Guest lectures by WGSN provide the latest consumer and design trends product design and consumer forecasts, curated data and industry expertise to help innovators create the right products at the right time for tomorrow's consumer.

New Start  New Start are denim specialists in new product development, sustainable innovation and production for the sector across Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh and Pakistan. New Star create everything from everyday basics to high-end fashion and provide an insight into global working with their visiting lectures.

Lara Jensen  Costume designer and milliner, Lara has has worked with some of fashion and film's biggest names, including Karl Lagerfeld, Jonas Akerlund, Peaches, Jessie J and Lady Gaga. Lara has previously led workshops with our Fashion Design students.

What facilities can I use?

In our professional working studio you’ll have your own personal workspace equipped with the technology and machines you’ll need to create your designs.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on industry standard equipment, learning key techniques and methods. You will master materials, both through traditional methods and using digital software.

We also have specialist technicians on site to support and share their knowledge with you, when and if you need it.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.

This course is 75% practice-based so you will have ample opportunity to develop your subject through a hands-on, experimental approach. You’ll get to enjoy a friendly, supportive and stimulating learning environment. This enables you to focus on perfecting your specialism, while developing your creativity and confidence.

You will benefit from close-knit tutor groups, studio-based lectures, masterclasses, demonstrations and live projects. You’ll also enjoy guest lectures, as well as put on shows and exhibitions. You’ll also have regular access to workshops to support the design process.

Thanks to our proximity to London, you can visit some of the world’s best shops, galleries and museums for inspiration. You could end up working with designers in and around the capital, gaining experience in how to adapt to the challenges of working in a business.

There are so many ways to make connections and you’ll be working on your career the very moment you begin your course.

What will I study?

On our BA (Hons) in Fashion Design degree programme, you’ll explore the many twists and turns of fashion, as well as how to research and develop ideas to produce exciting and innovative fashion. The course cultivates new ways of making and thinking.

Beyond design and construction, you will also learn how to present your ideas to clients and pitch design concepts to a wider audience.

On this course, you’ll develop your individual strengths, building a small collection and portfolio to launch you into the design industry on graduation.

Placements Plus 

BNU is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.

We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.

Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student, to increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.

What are the course entry requirements?

A typical offer will require a UCAS tariff score of: 32 - 56

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the 3-year undergraduate programme, or those who do not feel fully prepared for a Level 4 course, will be considered for the 4-year programme including a Foundation Year. The University is unable to accept any new applications from students who require sponsorship for a student visa to start in September 2022. This is due to the overwhelming popularity of our courses and visa processing timeframes.  Applications are still being taken from students who are already in the UK and hold the right to study.

From September 2022, those students living in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and EU nationals with settled status in the UK, will be considered Home students.

Most courses will involve some additional costs that are not covered by your fees.

What are my career prospects? 

Throughout your time with us, we’ll support you on the route to your chosen career. We’ll help you to develop crucial skills, encouraging you to become enterprising, employable and good leaders.

Graduates can also choose to further explore fashion in a postgraduate course.

The first job I got after graduating was an Internship with a Fashion Company as a Studio Assistant, where I have been helping to produce and construct garments alongside the head designers for clients.

My work at BNU prepared me for the role by providing me with firsthand studio experience, working with different machines and teaching me how to use different techniques, and providing me with the knowledge needed for the industry.
