Our foundation years offer an alternative route into university and are designed to help prepare you for your degree.
The foundation year acts as an additional year to your degree and, during this time, you will be able to develop your confidence, build your skills, gain an introduction to your chosen degree and get a taste of uni life.
Once you pass your foundation year, you are guaranteed a place onto your chosen course and will enter the first year of the degree programme.
There are many reasons to choose to study a foundation year:
- not feel ready for your degree
- not have the right qualifications
- want to explore a new subject
- be nervous about returning to study after a break from education.
Whatever your reason, a foundation course could be for you.

As a foundation year student, you can access all the support and facilities on offer at BNU. You will benefit from your very own personal tutor who can help answer any questions around your academic studies and our Student Achievement and Success Team who will also support you in reaching your full potential.
From our Careers Team who can enable you to stand out in the job market to our Counselling Service who can help you work through any emotional or personal issue you’re facing to our Disability Team and Health and Wellbeing Team, there’s plenty of people who are rooting for you to succeed.

When it comes to deciding where you’d like to study, there’s lots to consider. Come along to our Open Day and get all your questions answered. Discover more about your chosen course, take a tour of our High Wycombe Campus, and chat to students about what it is really like at BNU. You can also find out more about student finance, the application process, our accommodation, and the support available at BNU.
We are holding open days throughout the Autumn term, and you choose to attend either in person or online.
