Interview advice and tips for Performing Arts

I study Performing Arts (Film, TV and Stage). For your application, you are required to perform an audition piece and complete an interview. Here are some of my top tips for preparing and the audition day!

  • REMEMBER THE LECTURERS ARE ON YOUR SIDE - The lecturers want you to do well! They’re rooting for you so don’t be anxious around them!
  • CHOOSE AN AUDITION PIECE YOU’RE CONFIDENT DOING - You want to show off your acting, so being confident is the best way to go. You could choose something you’ve done before, or something you’ve seen that really interests you. Play to your strengths here.
  • KNOW THE CHARACTER AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION - Make sure you know the character you will be playing and some background information about the play. Doing this means you’ll be able to answer any questions, and you can put your all into your audition knowing you’ve done the preparation!
  • REMEMBER IT’S NORMAL TO FEEL NERVOUS - It is completely normal to feel nervous on your audition day. Take some time in the morning to calm yourself. I stretch and get rid of any tension in my body. This also helps warm you up!
  • WEAR SOMETHING YOU CAN MOVE AROUND IN -  It’s important that you wear something comfortable and that you can freely move in. The lectures might ask you to do your audition in a different way, and you don’t want to be limited by the clothes you’re wearing!
