Our research activities range across a number of themes, with activities conducted at local, national and international level. Buckinghamshire New University has an established track record in supporting development of innovative international educational programmes through Erasmus and projects.

Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boaters into Higher Education
Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boater (GTRSB) communities are severely underrepresented within Higher Education. Professor Margaret Greenfields' research into this area has lead to the development of the GTRSB into Higher Education pledge which has been taken up by several Institutions and Universities, including Buckinghamshire New University.
From Soldier to Strength and Conditioning professional
Senior Lecturer in Strength and Conditioning, Jonpaul Nevin has recently published a short article in the Professional Strength and Conditioning Journal titled “From Solider to Strength and Conditioning Professional: The Development of a Training Philosophy”, find out more about his article and research.
Attitudes towards punishment and rehabilitation of offenders
Given the rise in terror-related instances dominating news headlines in recent times, harsher punishment fads seem to be resurfacing in the UK, with the government in crisis over how to curb public panic surrounding terror, and the sentencing of offenders and emergency legislation introduced. Buckinghamshire New University offers postgraduate research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Our research degrees are awarded by Staffordshire University, with research students formally enrolled at BNU as the institution responsible for supervision and support.
Our researchers and research students are supported through a variety of researcher development events. The University has been one of the first institutions to offer the Professional Academic Apprenticeship for researchers.

Through our applied focus, BNU’s research and KE activities arise due to professional practice or educational need, with practitioners, stakeholders and service users at the heart of its development. Some of our partners include Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire NHS Healthcare Trust, West London Mental Health NHS Trust, Buckinghamshire Council, Chiltern Landscape partnership, High Wycombe Museum, Ad Astra teacher training network and the Traveller Movement.
